Mechanical Neck Pain

Neck pain is a common complaint among adults and can significantly impact your daily life, from causing discomfort during routine activities to affecting your sleep and posture. Mechanical neck pain, which is pain stemming from mechanical factors such as muscle strain, poor posture, or degenerative changes, is particularly prevalent. At Myoset, we specialise in diagnosing and effectively treating this type of neck pain with comprehensive chiropractic care.

Mechanical neck pain often arises from the stress and strain of daily activities and bad posture habits. It can be characterised by stiffness, discomfort when turning the head, and sometimes even radiating pain to the shoulders or arms. This type of pain does not typically have a neurological origin but results from dysfunctional vertebral joints and tense muscles in the neck and upper back.

If you are suffering from neck pain, let us help you find relief and regain your mobility.

FAQ

What causes neck pain?

Most neck pain is mechanical and can be caused by sustained postures at a screen or phone, sleeping awkwardly, sudden movements, or a build-up of muscle tension under stress. Joint stiffness in the cervical spine and irritation of the surrounding muscles are common findings. Disc and nerve-related causes are less common but can produce more distinctive symptoms.

Which structures in the neck cause pain?

Neck pain can come from the facet joints at the back of the cervical spine, the discs between the vertebrae, the surrounding muscles and ligaments, or the nerve roots leaving the spine. Muscle and joint sources account for most cases. Nerve involvement can produce symptoms travelling into the shoulder, arm or hand rather than staying local to the neck.

Can physiotherapy help neck pain?

Yes. Physiotherapy can help restore movement in stiff neck joints, reduce muscle tension, and build deep neck and shoulder blade strength to maintain improvement. At Myoset in Canary Wharf, treatment can be delivered through physiotherapy or osteopathy, often followed by clinical or reformer Pilates for the strengthening stage.

Why does my neck hurt from working at a desk?

Holding your head forward of your shoulders can place continuous load on the neck extensor muscles, while staying in one position for hours can also stiffen the upper cervical and thoracic joints. The duration of the position is often more important than having one perfect posture, which is why regular position changes can help.

Will a different pillow help my neck pain?

It can help if you consistently wake with neck pain that eases during the day, which may suggest your sleeping position is contributing to the problem. The aim is a pillow that keeps your head aligned with your spine. Front and back sleepers usually need a thinner pillow, while side sleepers may need a thicker one. A pillow is unlikely to resolve neck pain that is present throughout the day.

Can neck pain cause tingling in my arm?

Yes. Irritation of a nerve root in the neck can cause symptoms in the shoulder, arm or hand, including pins and needles, numbness or weakness. These symptoms need proper assessment to identify the affected area and determine the appropriate treatment approach.

When is neck pain a red flag?

Seek urgent medical assessment for neck pain after significant trauma, or if you develop weakness or numbness in the arms or legs, problems with balance or walking, difficulty swallowing or speaking, severe unremitting pain that wakes you, fever with neck stiffness, or any loss of bladder or bowel control.
